Lake Tahoe
A glimmering jewel in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe may have gained popularity as an upscale ski destination, but it is a year-round destination that offers something for everyone. Try stand-up paddleboarding over those giant submerged boulders that you see in all the Instagram pics or spend an evening with friends at one of the world-class restaurants found around the lake. Or relax after a day of skiing with a glass of wine before a roaring fire at a log cabin-inspired resort.
More than 2.7 million people visit the Lake Tahoe area each year, making it a favorite summertime retreat as well as one of the best skiing areas in the United States. Lake Tahoe straddles the California - Nevada border, Lake Tahoe is home to 15 exceptional ski resorts, including Heavenly Mountain Resort, Palisades, and Diamond Peak Resort.
With its reputation as a top ski destination, it may surprise you to find out that more people visit the Lake Tahoe area in the summer. The tranquil blue water of the lake, proximity to biking and hiking trails, and the pleasant mountain breezes make Lake Tahoe a picture-perfect vacation destination.
Several charming small towns dot the shoreline of Lake Tahoe, including Tahoe City, Tahoma, and Timberland. Larger Nevada cities include nearby Carson City, about 20 miles to the east, and Reno, almost 40 miles to the north.
Lake Tahoe Airport is located in South Lake Tahoe at the southern point of the lake and is the only airport adjacent to the lake. On the Nevada side of the lake, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is located in Reno, the Minden-Tahoe Airport is in Minden, and Carson City Airport is in Carson City. On the California side, there is the Truckee Tahoe Airport in Truckee and the Van Vleck Tells Peak Airport in El Dorado County.
Lake Tahoe is a place where visitors come to play hard and relax even harder. Hike the Tahoe Rim Trail, see the Tallac historic site, or marvel at the Vikingsholm, a 1929 lodge with a distinctive Nordic flair. From the ski resorts with their mountain views, gondola rides, and powdery slopes, to the trendy boutiques and chef-inspired restaurants, to the boating, sailing, and kayaking, and scenic trails, the Lake Tahoe region promises an experience of a lifetime.
