a gulfstream g 550 jet with landing gear down

The Gulfstream G550 is an ultra long-range business jet produced by Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah, Georgia.

Introduced in 2004, the G550 was produced until 2021. It was a significant improvement over previous G-series business jets and introduced Gulfstream’s PlaneView flight deck and enhanced vision system. This is a video system using a nose-mounted color camera and a heads-up display giving the pilot a better view than through the cockpit window.

The G550 incorporated other improvements, including drag reduction boosting range by 250 nautical miles on the same amount of fuel, another pair of cabin windows, and a 500-pound increase in takeoff weight using Rolls-Royce turbofan engines.

More than 6,000 of the aircraft were produced. Of these, approximately 60 were delivered to the U. S. Air Force as the C-38B for VIP passenger transport or other missions.

With a list price of $62 million, the Gulfstream 550 set the standard for business travel until being replaced by Gulfstream’s G650.

Gulfstream G550 Interior

The Gulfstream G550 cabin can be equipped with 19 seats in standard airline-style rows or subdivided into as many as four zones. Most corporate aircraft usually have custom interiors with fewer seats in groups of 4 in facing pairs in a business class arrangement. The characteristic oval cross-section of the fuselage of this line of Gulfstream Jets also adds to the sense of roominess in the cabin.

Options include seats that convert into beds for long trips—this allows the aircraft to provide sleeping for eight passengers. Cruising at 40,000 feet, the cabin altitude is maintained at a comfortable 6,000 feet or less in the cabin.

All windows have sliding covers that block outside light for passengers on the sunny side or who want to take a nap.

Custom interiors may include a wide assortment of amenities from wi-fi, microwaves, refrigerators, and sinks to coffee makers, and food-service centers.
