A proven performer in the light business jet segment, the Cessna Citation II specializes in short hops with moderate payloads onboard, also offering increased performance compared to its predecessors. The Citation II was introduced by Cessna in 1977 to infuse the young Citation lineup with more power, speed, and cabin room than earlier models. Also known as the Model 550, the Citation II stretched the fuselage of its predecessor, the Citation I, to accommodate up to 10 passengers and featured an improved maximum range of 1,998 nautical miles.
Its rapid success led the company to continue optimizing the Citation II for another 17 years, including developing a variant approved for single-pilot operation. In 1984 the Citation S550, an enhanced variant of the original Citation II, flew for the first time, showcasing a new engine offering better performance and higher fuel capacity.
During its 17-year production, Cessna built 848 Citation II’s, making it one of the company’s most popular business jets.
Cessna Citation II Interior
Designed to deliver more cabin room to the Citation light jet family, the Cessna Citation II interior measures 16 feet long by 4.8 feet wide by 4.7 feet tall. In its most popular configuration, the Cessna Citation II seats seven passengers, with one of the seats located in the aft cabin area.
Passengers benefit from almost 36 cubic feet of internal storage space for luggage and other belongings, with an additional 41 cubic feet located externally.
As a longstanding aircraft flown for a variety of private jet charter trips, many Citation II jets still in service also feature modernized amenities aimed at improving the passenger experience. Stow-away tables make it easy to enjoy meals and refreshments on board, and some models also include charging ports to remain connected during a flight.
Nearly 45 years since the development of the Cessna Citation II, its performance features remain impressive and competitive, even in today’s light jet market. With NBAA fuel reserves, the aircraft flies at a cruise speed of 432 miles per hour with a maximum range of 1,520 nautical miles.
The engines, two Pratt and Whitney JT15D-4 turbines delivering 2,500 pounds of thrust each – also contribute to the aircraft’s boosted performance, which includes improved runway capabilities. Even in short runway operations, the Citation II can fly longer than early production Citation jets such as the Cessna 500, making it a solid air charter service option for travelers heading to or departing from smaller, regional airports.
The modernization of the Citation II fleet continues into the cockpit, where modifications transform the jet’s flight deck leveraging state-of-the-art avionics. Many of the models flying today feature autopilot systems and touchscreen technology designed to provide more details about flight conditions than ever before.
